My name is Sean Fitzgerald I'm Swampskins town administrator Welcome to the party. All right Can I have everybody just come closer? We want to begin the speaking program and really kick off a few Remarks. All right Come on everybody So at some point you can get on my shoulders What's that All right, well So, thank you everybody this is really a celebration of community as The town administrator. I can't tell you how proud I am and how much pride I have The Swampskate is a Community where everybody can feel safe. Everybody can feel Accepted and everybody can be loved. I love the power and the energy around The the movement that has begun to really make sure that we are all inclusive Swampskate is a small town, but it has the biggest heart Around this is a community where you truly are accepted I'm really pleased that we have a chance to Begin. Hey Wyatt. This is my son Wyatt. He wants to say hello. All right I'm so thrilled that we have our young citizens here. I'm really proud of our police department and our fire department I'm proud of Chief Archer and Chief Madigan for Helping us lead the way we're we're making so many important changes that are building a community that's inclusive but before we begin I just want to start with acknowledging that Swampskate is Historic a community and and we're on native land The land that where our town now resides was referred to as M. Swamp Skutt Which is derived from Eastern Algonquin language meaning at the Red Rocks Long before the fish house was built in 1896 Swampskate was host to an abundant Traditional fishing and hunting grounds as well as the home of indigenous people. We acknowledge it Every moment we live work play pray gather study in this town of Swampskate We do on the lands of indigenous people for whom millennia prior to European colonization Called this place home and we are still here. I want folks to remember that our history is so intertwined with So many generations and it's important for us to be mindful of the special place that we have here. I also have the honor of reading a statement from Senator Markey on our official Swampskate pride flag raising It reads I'm sorry that I'm unable to join you here in Swampskate today But I'm honored to share a few words as we raise the pride flag in cities across Massachusetts and the country this month we celebrate the victories over the past five decades And we look to the fight of today and tomorrow This June we are called to remember the beginning of this movement and recall that our progress stands on the shoulders of the LGBTQ Plus people of color who stood for justice at the 1969 Stonewall riots we must remember and honor the LGBTQ plus pioneers that paved the way for equality and progress and we must lift up the LGBTQ voices who continue to speak out for social justice on frontlines Pride is a reminder that the social progress does not happen in isolation It is a reminder that righteous anger and radical. Hope can affect change So as we celebrate Pride Month and the hard-fought LGBTQ plus rights we have today. We must also recognize the work that still is left to be done We must continue to fight for an end to police brutality Against our LGBTQ plus community. We must yes, we we must Also ensure equal access to house housing and health care and we must push for an end to employment Discrimination. I am honored to stand with you as we strive for quality the quality accountability and justice no person should have to fear that for their life of Who they are or who they love that is the promise that we make to this generation Thank you and happy pride that's from Senator Markey, all right So I love those words I will tell you this is our second pride party I can't wait for the third the fourth the fifth and I can't wait to see this entire lawn covered with awesome citizens that truly believe that we are building a community that loves everybody that everybody can Feel safe and wonderful and you know extraordinary that said I really want to Recognize our police and fire departments. They're flying the pride flag. They've been flying it for the last four years They are true believers that we can build more inclusive communities And you know, we're we're excited to get on with the program. So at this point I'm gonna welcome up Tammy Faye Menendez who is our critical partner Tammy Faye Hey y'all My name My name is Tammy Faye Menendez. [Speaker 2] (34:42 - 36:17) My pronouns are she her and superwoman Okay, and I'm here just to let you guys know a few housekeeping things so that we can have a wonderful celebration today Great first and foremost Someone lost their keys Already, I want all the adults in the room to think about whether or not they want to leave here today With the car that they came in if you are missing a set of keys Please come see myself or Ally Fisk Over here to the to my right of the stage Um Also for my generation that is on snapchat We have a snapchat filter Dedicated to swamp Scott pride today You can start using it That's okay. If you don't it's okay, but if you do we'd love for you to use it If you need to use the restroom Town hall is open to do that Don't go in the trees, please Thank you. And Without further ado. I'm going to invite Justin snow to the stage Thank You Tammy Faye, thank you Sean. [Speaker 5] (36:17 - 42:19) I love the energy. I'll try to keep it up Good afternoon everyone. Thank you all for attending Being here today, thank you for swamp Scott for hosting the event My name is Justin snow, and I am a Swampskate community member and resident so I'm here today to share with you a little bit of the history of pride and why we continue to celebrate every day Or every year rather celebrate pride every day as well But before that and again, I know there's some chatter and I am asking that we please observe a moment of silence In memory of the 49 human beings who were killed in the pulse nightclub mass shooting Which is a gay club in Orlando, Florida exactly five years ago today Thank you All right. So the first pride event as we know them today was known as the Christopher Street Liberation Day on June 28th 1970 it took place in New York City as well as several other cities around the country This event took the form of a march or a parade to quite literally and figuratively create and take up space for marginalized identities based on gender and sexuality Which are now often collectively referred to as queer culture And also to draw attention to the continued struggle for liberation With a large crowd in a public space like we have today This state also is the celebration of the first anniversary of the Stonewall riots or uprising which Sean mentioned briefly in his words Senators words so a Little bit of context we have to remind ourselves of the legal and societal discrimination that existed at that time against the queer community in 1969 in every single state except, Illinois Consensual same-sex sexual activity was illegal the American Psychiatric Association classified homosexuality as a mental disorder and There were anti cross-dressing laws instituted in the mid 1850s Which criminalized anyone presenting in dress not belonging to their biological sex from a traditional viewpoint? And these were widespread across the country on top of this gay bars were essentially illegal Largely enabled by a clause in liquor laws that prohibited sale At quote disorderly or quote indecent establishments, so they were underground Establishments and unfortunately these were regularly raided by police One of these establishments was the Stonewall Inn at 51 Christopher Street in New York City Although there have been other similar events in other parts of the country prior to this such as the black cat protests in LA in 1967 which actually gave rise to the advocate which was the nation's first queer publication news magazine The Stonewall Inn incident is seen as very significant and a turning point so on June 28 1969 there was a police raid and Those who were not arrested instead of fleeing a garnered a crowd outside So as individuals who were arrested were brought out in handcuffs and put into police wagons I apologize Basically a resistance erupted and and according to many accounts this was Started by stormy de la vie a multiracial lesbian and eventual prominent activist This ignited a series of continued protests the formation of several activist groups and additional publications to keep the momentum going Prominent leaders of this Movement were Marsha P Johnson a black self-identified drag queen often now identified as a trans woman and Sylvia Rivera Many of whom identify as a Latina trans woman, but who once stated about her self-identified complex identity Quote I'm tired of living with labels. I just want to be who I am. I am Sylvia Rivera So this message carries me to today We may not be celebrating with a traditional parade, but we're here to honor this history those individuals that I mentioned and All the others who I have not mentioned who fought and continue to fight for civil and human rights for LGBTQIA plus people I'm fully aware that my four minute or so summary left out a lot of details. So I encourage you to You know seek out additional information on your own and You know I just wanted to say we have come a long way and I am grateful for the progress that has been made the legal protections that now exists compared to back then and also compared to other countries today, but of course We still have a lot of work to do and You know in our country and worldwide there are still anti LGBTQIA plus laws Being upheld Created and Negative sentiments continue to persist. So I will end with this. I'm ending now. Thank you for listening to me pride is also a celebration of just living life authentically or working towards authenticity And being unafraid of who you are So whether you identify as a member of the queer community an ally Somewhere in between or neither but are here and open to learn more This event is for all of us to celebrate and share our authentic selves with each other So thank you for listening and enjoy the rest of the event [Speaker 4] (42:41 - 48:34) My name is Seneca team my pronouns are she her and I'll be reading two pieces today This first one is called a letter to who I can be and I wrote this like a few years ago Before I came out and I didn't think I was going to come out but here we are So here it is a letter to the piece of myself that I have locked away a love I've never understood because I've always hidden from her Eternity's too late, but I am sorry Sorry that I never took the time to get to know you or to explore with you And I'm sorry for being so afraid to acknowledge you that I feared the taste of your label on my tongue I'm sorry. I've tucked you away in the crevices of my heart hoping that maybe you disappear And I'm sorry because I've always claimed proud and I love to celebrate that of others But I've never been able to pull you out from from the pile of expectations. I buried you under Never been able to wear you on display and I'd love to dance in the streets to show you off amidst the rainbows and the sea of flags Waving what our pride could be to announce who we are to the world with no apologies or shame following But my body crumples to the ground a pile of drunken bones Pathetic with this grace and my voice gets lost in my throat falling only to a sad rasp begging to be ignored To this person I am not yet ready to be I'm sorry that I've let the loud of everyone else drown you out To the lonely pits of my stomach where you rise with the bile at the mention of your name I let the uproar of an unwelcoming world Settle in my head to crawl inside my brain Chained up and shoved into the proverbial closet with the rest of my metaphorical monsters and demons Until I decide that I'm tired Tired of the fear. I tied you to of the shame and embarrassment Tired of all this lying painting you to blend in when we were born to stand out Covering your rainbow you're by you're happy with the doll of the rest of the world of the norms and the socially acceptable Even still I am holding you back Still pushing you into the cold of the shadows into the darkness to watch the world change without us and for that I will never stop being sorry and maybe one day in a dream where I am honest with myself and And when I am honest with reality and with myself Maybe I will be able to take you by the hand and leave you out Thank you Okay, so the second poem is called loveless Sometimes it feels like no matter who I love I will be shoved into a box and the rest of me will be filed away for argument's sake Sometimes it isn't enough that I fall in love with laughter and the sweetness that soaks the air in its absence The sprinkle soft silence following the most bitter moments because there will still be questions Sometimes the love I fall into appears shallow because of how far it can be spread Sometimes I'm in love with a boy, but everyone wonders should you really be okay with that? With the way that I love the way that I am and the way that I love and who I can love It is easier for people to dwell in that which they cannot understand To see my relationship with a boy as straight to paint me as a norm and erase my history It is easy for them to feel alarmed when I speak of a love I have felt for another girl Does your boyfriend know is he okay with the extra competition? Highlight the faults, but cross out everything else Not enough that it only takes a smile to send a flutter in my steady heartbeat The kind that splits any tension with eyes that crinkle sweetly a simple dance about Cheeks that flush the softest pink when I call them pretty My universal affection and attraction gets tainted temporary too often as if the way I love is so easily broken That I'm creating a home in this cardboard box labeled bisexual But labeled bisexual until I can make a decision and move to a more acceptable title Not enough that my breath stutters with the right person at my side Having stayed up through several nights just emptying our busy heads Afraid to give into exhaustion because what if we blink and miss this? Waking up to a morning apologies for falling asleep way too soon. I fall in love with the humor that twinkles with eyes of any color With a challenge stretching across smirks like a secret meant only for me and someone who can find love in me I fall for words spoken gently as they curl into a whisper of a tender moment and the harshness that sometimes sparks through passion I even fall in the face of tears and strength that goes unnoticed and a side of someone that only I can see And the sentiment of this love doesn't change because of a body I fall in love with minds that reach for my own and I fall in love with all that I am And to call this love confusion will never make sense to call this love a phase will never ring true Because it's a part of me like anything else and you wouldn't question the validity of the blood pumping through my body Or ask if I'm completely sure that I have two arms So why shouldn't you accept my love for what it is? [Speaker 6] (48:51 - 52:51) Hello My name is Victor Terry. I am a sixth grade English teacher My pronouns are he him and I will be sharing a short piece that I have also read Before I start to read today, can we get a round of applause for all of the youth in the audience? This event and events like this happening across the country are very important for you We have saved somebody's life today and that deserves a round of applause as well. I Do have written a letter and I dedicate my letter to Nigel Shelby Young man from Huntsville, Alabama Who decided to end his own life due to bullying Dear Nigel You beautiful black child. I wish you were my student I wish I had the opportunity to divide to dive into their eyes is watching God and Sula with you I wish I could stand with you during your bad days I wish I could cheer you on during your good ones It would mean the world to know your mother by first name because of all the phone calls I would make home in praise of you My goal would be to show you that there is a better forever The nightmare you are experiencing will not be yours forever My lessons would center on love my worksheets will be maps to connect the mind to the heart My final exam would center on how Jenny May Crawford in their eyes is watching God by mother Zora How she found a way to divorce herself from the shame that she was forced into marriage with in class We will read relish in the freedom of Sula and her unflinching Disobedience of respectability they sought to make her a better woman, but a lesser human Nigel I feel like I have failed you for so many years During the times when I wasn't brave enough to stand in my truth all the times I put a shell of myself and enter into a school never acknowledging my own humanity Never allowing students like you to see me in my queerness Unapologetically denying them a person to see and to know sees them Sadly you have left us so I can never be your teacher, but I am still a teacher Sadly, I can never be that example of a queer future for you But I can be for young people that I have the honor of teaching and learning from every day in my six years of education This is the first year. I've swallowed my own shame and fear. This is the first year I have let my students know that I too am queer and when I did that The light that I saw lit into eyes of young queer folks was magical To all the adults in the audience Our young people are dying while visibility of queer folks may be increasing in the media You still need to know that their teacher is queer. Their barber is queer. Their elected officials are queer They need to know that their neighbors are allies. They need to see the pride flag 365 days a year They need to see us live lives free of fear and shame They need to see common people be Accepted Thank you Thank you, thank you, thank you Right now we have a special treat I'm gonna have you all introduce yourselves and beautiful humans. [Speaker 2] (52:52 - 53:18) Thank you for sharing your gifts and talents with us Enjoy All right One two one two. [Speaker 9] (53:18 - 53:29) Hello everybody. Thank you for being here today. I'm so excited to be here, too My name is Sophia burrow, this is my father Philip Alexander burrow my pronouns. Is she there? [Speaker 1] (53:30 - 53:32) He him and [Speaker 9] (53:32 - 53:49) We are gonna sing for you today We are singing brave by Sara Bareilles And I want to dedicate this one to all the kids who have come out Are still coming out or haven't come out yet because I know how hard that is and you are brave [Speaker 1] (54:16 - 55:44) You can turn a phrase into a weapon or a drug You Can be amazing you can turn a phrase into a weapon or a truck You can be the outcast be the backlash of somebody's lack of love [Speaker 9] (55:45 - 55:59) Or you can start speaking up Nothing's gonna hurt you the way the words do when they settle me to spin kept on the inside no sunlight sometimes the shadow wins [Speaker 1] (56:00 - 59:21) But I wonder what would happen if you say what you want to say and let the words With what you wanna say I Want to see you be brave Everybody's in there everybody's been stared down by the enemy Falling for the fear and about to disappear and bow down to the mighty Don't run Stop holding it up. Maybe there's a way out of this cage Maybe one of these days you can let the light What you wanna say and let the words fall Oh With what you wanna say and let the words fall And since your history Won't do you any good Let your words be The truth Say what you wanna say and let the words With what you wanna say and let the words fall out Oh Thank you, thank you so much Oh Hi, there we go. [Speaker 7] (59:21 - 1:01:49) Hello Hi, I'm Teddy I use she they pronouns I am co-president of the swamps at GSA and I have a speech for you guys What is a rainbow Well, it's reds and oranges and yellows and greens and blues and purples drawn on a preschoolers printer paper What is a rainbow it's refractions of light beaming down from the clouds made from tiny water droplets bouncing and dancing in the open sky What is a rainbow? It's the light at the end of clashes and winds and storms. What is a rainbow? It's life and healing and Sun and nature and art and harmony and spirit and soul They're colorful and loud and bright and proud and there's some say there's treasure left at the end Some say that there's no end at all and many cultures. They are present. Hope What a perfect symbol for people like me a queer Jewish child who burst into the room ten times louder than she probably should be a Rainbow perfectly encapsulates the ones who could truly care less what someone thinks of them someone who is not afraid to be authentically themselves What a perfect symbol for those who aren't out yet The ones waiting for their storms to pass so they could finally burst out and scream. This is who I am At the top of their lungs with the sound of thunder Even those who are absolutely terrified of declaring themselves So who don't even know who they are just yet. Oh a rainbow to look towards for strength and guidance makes all the sense in the world Rainbows mean so many things, but we all know what they mean today Life playing music and dancing and screaming at the top of your lungs to lyrics. You've heard so many times before Healing holding a friend who's lost to their family to hatred close to your chest and promising that it will get better Sun the light at the end of a long dark tunnel Nature soft grass and flower crowds and being truly yourself for the first time Art painting and music and drag and poems and games and short stories and so much more Harmony the peace of knowing who you are Soul and spirit giving every part of yourself the pride and love you deserve That's what rainbows are to me [Speaker 8] (1:01:50 - 1:03:13) I'm Ali. I'm the director of communications here Thank you, this is Gorgeous. Thank you all for coming. And I also want to thank a couple of people first of all Tammy fame the need Thank you so much For the light she has brought to this event and the amazing ideas and I hope you all can join us at the next event That we're doing as well, which is Juneteenth on Thursday at 1 p.m And I also want to acknowledge our officials who are here our elected officials, please Welcome Peter Spellios David Grishman select board members And Suzanne right from the school committee All right, so now we're getting to the main event here we're going to raise the flag [Speaker 1] (1:04:52 - 1:04:53) Oh [Speaker 2] (1:05:22 - 1:12:45) All right, y'all can we give a round of applause to the community effort the community effort in this and this flag or these flags will be raised 365 days of the year Yes, this is our cause to celebrate pride by progress But it's 365 we don't walk away from this event Forgetting that we all are here. We all are human We all want To be safe. We all want to feel affirmed and loved Wherever we might go I Want to thank every single person who touched This event this could not have happened without the community of Swampscott coming together So can we give each other a round of applause? Sometimes we need a reminder Sometimes we need to remember That If we know where we came from We may know better where to go and so When we think about what this event actually means for this community Like the speaker said before me we've saved People's lives today by hosting this event here in Swampscott I believe that in my core. Do you all believe that as well? I Love Maya Angelou, so I always believe that whatever she has to say is just gold Maya Angelou said it best to me. I Have respect for the past But I'm a person of the moment. I am here and I do my best to be completely centered at the place I'm at Then I go forward to the next place So as we move from this place today Let's remember The values let's remember the feeling Let's remember that we are human beings We love not hate Thank you all for being here today Happy Pride Oh Oh
